HDCUSA, Nutrition advice.
If you don’t have a Nutritionist and your Doctor only tells you to cut calories, you have to take it upon yourself to research what’s best for your body and health. Remember, in the past, many Doctors weren’t equipped and could come across as rude and culturally insensitive in providing the best guide for getting healthy, other than telling you to eat less, requesting that you get blood work done, and giving you a result of that test, but no real advice on how to get healthier.
Americans don’t have to give up eating biscuits, corn bread, or tortillas. Best advice: cut your portions in half. Also, try not to engage in Sizeism on others or yourself; all bodies are different based on culture and nationality. If you see someone giving anybody a hard time because of size differences, call them out on it and tell them to fuck off, even if it’s in a public setting.
“Recognize that only insecure, elitist, uneducated people go out of their way to put a person down.”
When modifying your health style in a culture where food is everything.
When enjoying yourself at a family or a friend’s event, you can say: Thank you for the wonderful meal you have shared with me, but I can’t have another serving, or I’ll consider it for later, but I am good with what I have recently consumed.”
Expect to get dirty looks, especially when you start refusing to drink that Coca Cola, Pepsi, or alcoholic beverage, but remember you have the right to say no and have that be respected.
The truth is, you might need to eat more or less of something, depending on your blood type and metabolism. One diet doesn’t always work for another person. Eating soy-based dishes can be good for women but not for all men.
If you do have insurance, seek out a Nutritionist who is in-network. Just like going to your general Doctor, Dentist, or Physical Therapist, a good Nutritionist should be reached out to who will take your PPO, HMO, or whatever insurance card you have and will let you know what is covered or not. Most Nutritionists will test out everything in your blood before giving you the results and a list of things you need to add to your diet.
Add Snacks between meals. Nature Valley granola bars are a lifesaver if you work as a medical professional and haven’t had time to eat your lunch.
It’s also ok to have your favorite snack from time to time, you don’t have to give up eating Pizza, Portillo’s Chicago cake shake, Lays, or that one bag of peanut M&Ms if you have a small serving a week and you are including physical activity. Strive for healthy living and not vanity.
I love my partner’s figure. I am pissed the Doctor is forcing them to lose weight!
If you love your romantic partner’s curves but their Doctor has informed them they need to adjust their diet to prevent heart disease or diabetes. Be their support system in getting healthy, even if you might not want your partner to be a stick figure.
It’s similar to a scenario where a spouse or girlfriend wants a breast reduction because it hurts her body. Be empathetic because it’s a hard decision on their end, too. (Your partner might think you won’t find them attractive when drastic changes occur, but remember it’s not about that; it’s about making sure you have more years with that person without them suffering from future health issues.)
